Here is an idea I love about doing a Program Premiere in January for the songs in the new year. At our Stake Primary Auxiliary Training last week, my take away was teaching the kids to recognize why we sing so much at church, the importance of music in their lives, and to recognize the Spirit as they are singing, and I believe this activity will accomplish all of those.

Wiggle Sticks

Here is a link I found for Wiggle Sticks that are on my list of things to make. And, if there's a certain song I really want to sing, I can rig it without them knowing! :) Ha ha, I would never do that! ;)

Primary Song Snowflakes
http://ocdprimarychorister.blogspot.nl/2013/10/activity-primary-song-snowflakes.html
I can't wait to try this activity! Doesn't get any cuter than this! Snowflakes with themes that coordinate to songs. The kids will be blown away.

Sing or Dare
As our last review day before we prep the details of the program in the chapel, we played Sing or Dare. It's October, so I used two different colored plastic pumpkins. One (our sing pumpkin) had paper strips with our songs on them, the other had dares written on them. We sang a song, then they could pick two dares, then another song. Some of the dares included props, some didn't.
We had the combined sharing and singing time, and still didn't get through all our program songs, but that's ok, because they were super motivated. If you only have the regular time, choose your dares carefully to make sure they don't take too long. Or else have one song, one dare.
Get the flag and lead the group in the pledge of allegiance.
Skip around the group and sing your ABC's.
Rub your belly, pat your head, and sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
Put on the Buzz Lightyear wings (my sons old Halloween costume) and shout "To Infinity and Beyond!"
Put on the cowboy hat and shout "YeeHaw!"
Put on the princess hat, find a friend and give them a compliment.
Stand on your chair and shout "I love Primary!"
Name all the kids in the room.
Name all the teachers in the room.
Name the two months we have General Conference.

Dress the Chorister
As a review, we did dress the chorister. Summary: review multiple songs, or sing line by line to teach a new song, etc. if they do well, they get to pick something to dress you up.
The kids loved it, and were very into it. Definitely a keeper. Suggestions: Vary the parts of the body your dress up items go on. In Sr. I had way too many things on my neck and head, it was hot and hard to see! I had too many options available, and they kept picking things for my head. Choose less items to select from, and more variety.

Families can be Together Forever
Today I taught Families can be Together Forever, and it was awesome! The kids (even Jr. Primary) were completely engaged, and loved everything. So much more enjoyable for me when the kids are having a good time and paying attention!
I basically followed this lesson. It fit in perfectly with Sharing Time, and I like the idea of having pictures to clue into the words, but not the whole song typed out.
For Jr. I taped pieces under the chairs, and for Sr. I just had a presidency member pass the pictures out. We'd say the line, and see who had the picture to go with the line.
After we went over the lyrics, I added the fun element by doing this Teaching the Whole Family Review. Even the Sr. Primary thought it was hilarious, and were marching around the room, panting like dogs, etc.
Next week I will do the 2nd verse with Jr. Primary, and in Sr. Primary we will do a review game, as they reviewed/learned both verses today. A Plinko Board and Wheel of Fortune Wheel are on my list of things to do, so maybe I can get one of them done this week for Sr!

Pioneer Sunday
This Sunday is the Sunday before Pioneer Day, and we will celebrate by doing this "Pioneer Walk" (like a cake walk). I have only taught them one Pioneer Song, so we will sing that as well as review our other songs, but it should be fun! Who doesn't love a surprise treat as well, right?
Tips
*Spread the circle out much bigger than you think to make sure the Jr kids have to take a few steps before they can step on the next footprint. Bigger is better. The circle was slow moving because the kids didn't want to take a step until they could step on the next footprint.
* Have the pianist play the song as the kids walk. Then when she stops, the selected child has to tell you the name of the song or sing part of it. Then the whole group sings the whole song.

When I Am Baptized
Today I reviewed "When I Am Baptized". The kids all knew it pretty well, it was in last year's program too. So here's what I did. It was my first day so I reviewed everyone's names, and talked about how excited I was to be singing with them. We also talked about how some Sundays we will focus on the words, sometimes on the melody and the notes, sometimes on what the songs mean, and sometimes we will just plain have fun!
Jr. I talked about how much I liked the song, and told them that one thing that's so cool about this song is that even the music is like a rainbow and sounds like rain. The melody/notes in the verses start low and gradually step up, then back down, kind of looking like a rainbow. The pianist played the melody soft and legato, so they could visualize the rainbow. Then we talked about the chorus, and how it is more choppy like rain, and the pianist played it staccato. The kids thought it was pretty cool.
We looked up Genesis 9 (well, I looked it up) and they summarized the story of Noah for them and talked about how it ties into the song, that a rainbow is a symbol of the covenant we've made and how the rainbow is a symbol of how the Lord will never flood the earth like that again.
I made rainbow wands (popsicle sticks with ribbon glued on the ends and a pom pom to cover up the messy glue), and we sang the song probably 4 or 5 times, giving all the kids turns waving the rainbow wands.
Sr. I pretty much did everything the same, I just didn't do the rainbow wands. They looked up the scripture with me and were much more involved in the discussion. I spent more time with the Sr. kids on names because I was a CTR 6 teacher before this and so I knew a lot more of the Jr. kids.
It was a great day, and I just think I have the best calling in the whole church! I get to sing (even though I really can't carry a tune on my own-who cares!), have fun with the kids, and I don't have to do the disciplining! I get a lot of freedom as to what I teach and how I do it, and it's just the best!

Primary Chorister
So, today was my first Sunday as Primary Chorister, and I am in heaven. I had so much fun, I just loved every minute of it. And I have to say, the Lord is already blessing me because I was able to learn everyone's name today! I am naturally terrible with names, it will go in one ear and out the other instantly, but I was able to remember everyone before Singing Time was over. I originally was thinking I wouldn't really sing acapella (I know how to read music but can't carry a tune without a piano to cover up my many mistakes), but I did it anyway and I didn't care! I am grateful for this calling and can't wait to see where it takes us!
